I think we should have a “chat” category on the forums, for miscellaneous stuff.
It’s really difficult to comment on the blog, because when you sign in, it takes you to the page where you can write a new blog entry. Confusing! Then, you have to navigate back to the post you wanted to comment on. Maybe we should allow people who aren’t signed on to comment on blog posts (but not to post new ones)?

LARGE COFFEE TABLE WANTED:
I’d like to buy a squareish wooden coffee table table, approx 3-4ft wide. Bearing in mind that Im selling off not only my own surpluses but also those of other people’s tidy-ups too, Id be happier with an item swop if possible. I dont mind one which is a bit rough as Im very practical and can tidy it up myself, plus I’d prefer rustic looking so no IKEA please.. Thanks.
Hi Sally,
Looks like you have a crate full of stuff to sell. Good luck with it.
If you don’t sell it why don’t you put up a stall at Bundo at the Back Lanes mid June.
Also we have a classified section of the blog which you might want to move this to. Just click on “Forum Home” above then “classified” and then “new topic”. If you do that, a link to your post will appear on the front page of the blog on the left under ‘recent forum activity’ and you’ll get far more people reading it.
cheers
Jonathan

Hello,
I’m looking for a house cleaning service, just a couple of hours a week. Can anyone recommend anyone?
Many thanks,
Sarah
Hi,
I’ve came across your site and it looks great!
The contact link doesnt seem to be working however, do you have an email address I can contact you on?
I’d like to share some information about a project I’m involved with in Strathbungo.
thanks,
Reuben
Hi Reuben
I’m glad you like the website. The e-mail addresses should be working but we’ll look into it. Any info you’d like to share can be posted here (it’s moderated beforehand) or do come along to our next meeting – 18th April, 7:30pm at Grianach on Nithsdale Rd.
HI Dee,
Just wanted to touch base as I am a fellow Canadian who has been in the area for 3 years; I am from Peterborough, Ont. and have family in Toronto are now!!
Also wanted to touch base as I saw your article in the Bungo news letter about working from home. I was trying to find the forums to have a wee look at it, as my partner is very interested in starting up his own business.
I hope all is well!!
Laura
@L Skinner
Hi, Laura! It looks like I may be setting up my own business too, at least for the time being. We should chat. My email is deidrem (at) btinternet.com
@Dee Miller
I was looking for the forum on home working, as I also work from home…
I wondered if anyone knows who is responsible for the fence line that runs along the railway on Moray Place? I think I remember last year the council cleaning up the overgrowth on the kerbside although they do not seem to have done so this year. Is it the rail company’s responsibility to maintain the fence? Anyway, I wondered if there was no clear responsibility whether anyone would be interested in trimming back the foilage to the fence and giving the fence a go with a wire brush and a lick of paint with me? Many hands make short work, I think it would really improve the appearance of the street.
Just took part in today’s Brighter Bungo Clean up. Another disappointing turnout from the community, but many thanks to those who did make the effort and a great job was done!
It struck us as we were cleaning up the lanes, if folk leave their bins out in the back lane, are they fair game to be used by anyone?! If folk don’t like their bin being filled by others, they could always keep it in their garden?!
@Scott Mackay
The problem with keeping bins in the garden is that we never really know when the binmen are turning up. I know we were all given specific dates last year but this seems to have gone to the wall. Like most people, I’m away at work when they do come so it’s not easy to know when to leave bins out. However, I do think residents could help by not leaving unwanted bits of furniture or household appliances to be uplifted if they have a car or access to a car. Polmadie dump is minutes away.
@Neil
Don’t know how I missed this post. The land is supposed to be maintained by Network Rail but they have failed to do so. Given that they have also failed to get rid of the Japanese Knotweed on the line, which they are legally obliged to do, it’s a fair bet that they won’t be out doing general weeding anytime soon! I’ve noticed that among the weeds is mare’s tail. This is invasive and difficult to get rid of. It has to be dug out (at least 5cm below ground level) and burned or binned NOT composted. If you have a date in mind for doing the weeding/fence why not post it on the main page?
Hi all – I just moved to the bungo! (Well, a month ago.) Does anyone know if the recycling bins actually get picked up here, and how often? The two out the back of the close here on Pollokshaws road seem to be ignored by the council and have been sitting packed full since before I arrived…
I grew up in strathbungo during the 80′s – Many of you will know the georgiades clan from the Athena Greek Taverna. I am looking to settle an argument about where Charles Rennie Macintosh stayed in Regent Park Square. I understand there is a plaque on no. 15 but wikipedia clearly refers to no. 27. Anyone able to confirm where he stayed, for how long and at what dates.
We have 3 wooden slated blinds to fit the 3 back windows on Marywood (Ground & Upper) & Queens Square South if anyone would like them. Free to good home and in good condition. Contact colin@weareeveryone.com if you would like them.
Hi All,
I’ve recently just moved into Regent Park Sq….was wondering whether the single-glazed sash windows could be replaced with double glazed units in the same style?
With it being a conservation area I’m not sure if we have to replace like-for-like?
Thanks
Kevin
Hi Kevin,
There’s a great free guide from Historic Scotland that you can download here: http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/learning/freepublications/publicationsresults/publicationsresultsdetail.htm?title=Sash%20and%20Case%20Windows%20-%20A%20short%20guide%20for%20homeowners
The short answer to your question is no. The guide states: “Replacing existing timber windows with new, double-glazed windows is often promoted as a means of
combating heat loss, draughts, dust ingress and providing perceived improvements to sound insulation and security. However research has shown that double glazed replacement of existing windows is not cost effective in comparison with other energy conservation measures. In fact your existing windows can be upgraded at a lower cost to bring these benefits whilst still retaining the original features and style which give character to your home.
The replacement of the panes of glass in existing multi-paned sashes with double glazed units is usually not possible. This is due to the narrow astragal and small
glazing rebate dimensions of existing windows being incompatible with the technical requirements of double glazed units, which usually require a much larger rebate and a corresponding enlargement of astragal size. As an alternative, secondary glazing, using side hung or horizontally or vertically sliding windows, can be fitted internally. Secondary glazing reduces heat loss and dust ingress and provides very good insulation against noise. Where the building is listed, this alteration would require consent from your Local Authority planning department.
You can get grants to repair existing windows. We did this. Had to wait a while for the grant but well worth it and we got loads of great advice. The grants are awarded by Glasgow Heritage: http://www.glasgowheritage.org.uk/grants.htm.
Hi Laura
Thanks for the detailed info – I’ll look into this now, thankfully the previous owner replaced the rear windows with new ones so I’ll only have to worry about the front 3!
Kev
Hello Laura (and any other society members). I’ve had an idea that I thought I’d share. With the lease on Grianach currently for sale, do you think it would be feasible for the Society to purchase it? Obviously I don’t know the state of your finances, but it strikes me that this may be a good way to raise money.
It could possibly be run by society members on a volunteer/profit share basis, or perhaps as a social enterprise to help the long-term unemployed get back to work or to help adults with learning difficulties or mental health issues integrate into the community (this may have the additional benefit of start up funds being made available from central government).
Aside from anything else it used to be a nice, popular little cafe that I thought added something to the street and it’s a shame that its just lying empty.
What a great idea for the future of Grianach. It would be fantastic to have a community cafe in the way you describe but I think the financial constraints and the time commitment is too much for the current Society. If the rumour mill is to be believed, however, Grianach isn’t going to be closed for long. There has been interest in taking on the lease so fingers crossed it will soon be up and running once more.
Does anyone know what is happening about rubbish collection? We have had two Wednesdays in a row with no collection. The bottom end of Queen Square is a mass of wheelie bins, and when they do not get emptied we start to get rubbish lying on the ground.
Hi Julyan, I suspect this is something to do with access due to the ongoing works. We have spoken to the contractors in the past and were given assurances that they would move the bins to the refuse collectors and put them back again. We are meeting with them on Monday, so I’ll be sure to remind them of what was agreed!
We’ve just had another Wednesday with no green bin collection. The blue and purple bins have been emptied. But the green ones are the smelly ones, and black bags are now piling up everywhere. Who can we complain to in the council? Thanks
Hi Julyan. The number to call is 0141 287 9700. I called last Thursday after we’d been missed two weeks running and our bins were emptied on Saturday and they did return, as scheduled, on Wednesday.
Re Michael’s request about Charles Rennie Mackintosh (September); you are both right. Rennie Mackintosh lived with his parents at No 27, but the entire street was renumbered in the 1930s (evens one side, odds the other), and it is now No 15. Less well known, he also lived at No 6, when it was No 2. Confused?
I am compiling an extensive database of Strathbungo properties and their residents – more to follow on this website one day, hopefully. @Michael Georgiades
