Strathbungo’s newest cafe and deli is now open

Business has really taken off at Remedy, Strathbungo’s new cafe and deli which opened on 15th September, and no wonder – Phil and Liz Callaghan are bringing a much-needed ambience to Pollokshaws Road, which has been long been lacking the high quality bistros and coffee shops from the other side of the tracks.

Queen Square residents Phil and Liz are ably assisted by Liz’s daughter Jennifer, who is currently studying at Glasgow School of Art.

Liz is originally from Cumbria and she moved to Glasgow nine years ago to work in the health care sector. Having run a takeaway and restaurant a few years ago, the idea of setting up a cafe and deli had been growing in her mind and eventually, after a stint in events management, she decided it was now or never.

There’s a decided emphasis on Mediterranean ingredients but Liz hopes to develop the cafe further, bringing in more French foods and even far eastern influences – real fusion food!

She’s also keen to hear suggestions for the deli and, as a result of customers’ requests, she’s already looking at stocking a variety of produce from salt beef to parsnip crisps.

The initial success of the business in Strathbungo has taken the Callaghans by surprise so they’re making a real effort to work out the best opening hours for all, including – an exclusive for the local community – Sunday mornings for coffee and papers.

They’re also staying open in the early evenings to catch workers returning home who want to gather in the essentials for a quick, easy and delicious supper.

Current opening hours are:
Monday-Wednesday: 9am-6pm
Thursday-Friday: 9am-7.30pm
Saturday: 9am-5pm
Sunday: 11am-5pm.
Remedy is at 729-731 Pollokshaws Road, opposite the Taverna. Telephone: 0141 423 9181.

Have bags of fun at your neighbourhood book club

What better way to christen your new Bungo book bag than by using it for its intended purpose and taking a well-thumbed tome along to the Bungo Book Club!

As the autumn leaves fall, escape to the brilliant sunshine of Jamaica, find intrigue in the Bay of Angels or explore the custom of kite flying in pre-Soviet Afghanistan. Better still, join the Strathbungo Book Club and do it all from your own or a neighbour’s home – with a glass of wine to hand.

The Strathbungo Book Club has been meeting since March 2004 on one Wednesday evening every month, and members have read and discussed novels ranging from classics to the bestsellers.

So if you love reading and discussing books – and discovering new writers – and if you are willing to explore novels that you may never otherwise have read, contact Linda Forrester on 424 3258.

Saturday, 15 October – 11am – 1pm
Queens Park Parish Church Hall (Queens Drive)
Entrance £1, includes tea/coffee/juice and home baking

Come along this Saturday and meet your neighbours – find some bargains, buy some Fair Trade goods, try your luck on the Tombola and Lucky Lollies, then browse through the second-hand book stall (believed to be the best in the south of Glasgow).

It’s the Strathbungo Society’s annual autumn knees-up, designed to celebrate our community and raise some much needed funds for staging more events and activities. Combine it with a visit to the Farmer’s Market in Queens Park!

Fun stuff for kids – time out for the rest of us!
